Welcome to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

It was exactly 34.07 million years ago that the volcanic eruption took place and most of the insects and plants died and those which fell at the bottom of the lake turned into fossils. Huge petrified redwoods and the detailed fossils of plants and insects clearly reveal a different Colorado a long ago. It represent the latest Eocene epoch of the earth history.
More than 1700 species of plants and insects have been found in this region. The rich deposits discovered at the Florissant bed give us a detailed look at life in an ancient North America.
